How to Style a Y2K Rhinestone Baby Tee: 5 Outfit Ideas

A Y2K Vintage Clothing styling guide · 6 min read

The rhinestone baby tee is the little black dress of the Y2K wardrobe — small, sparkly, and secretly capable of anchoring almost any outfit. If you've just thrifted one (or you're eyeing one and wondering whether it'll actually earn its keep), here are five ways to wear it that carry it well beyond the year 2000.

1. The classic: low-rise denim & a belt

This is the outfit the baby tee was born for. Pair it with low- or mid-rise jeans — bootcut and flare read the most authentically early-2000s, but a straight leg keeps it modern. Add a thin belt slung slightly below the waistband, and let the tee sit right at the hip. The whole look lives on proportion: fitted top, relaxed bottom. If your tee is cropped, a higher-rise jean softens the amount of skin without losing the silhouette.

2. Soft it up: fairycore layering

A rhinestone tee doesn't have to mean full club-2003. Layer it under a sheer floral slip dress, or over a long tulle or lace-trim skirt, and the sparkle suddenly reads romantic instead of flashy. This is our favourite way to bridge Y2K and fairycore — two aesthetics that share a love of shimmer and don't take themselves too seriously. Keep accessories delicate: a ribbon choker, a couple of butterfly clips.

3. Grown-up contrast: tailored trousers

Want to wear it to something that isn't a party? Tuck the baby tee into high-waisted tailored trousers and add a longline blazer. The tension between the tiny sparkly top and the sharp tailoring is the entire point — it stops the outfit from feeling like a costume and makes the rhinestones look intentional. Finish with a pointed flat or a low heel.

4. Everyday: cardigan & a mini skirt

For a look you'd actually wear on a Tuesday, throw an unbuttoned cardigan over the tee and pair with a denim or pleated mini. It's the "coquette running errands" formula, and it works because the cardigan tones the sparkle down to something you can wear in daylight without a second thought. Push the sleeves up, add a small shoulder bag, done.

5. Night out: leather & heels

When you do want the full effect, lean in. A rhinestone baby tee with a leather or faux-leather mini, sheer tights, and a heeled boot is unapologetically Y2K going-out. The trick to keeping it chic rather than throwback is to let the tee be the only sparkle in the room — everything else stays matte and dark so the rhinestones do all the talking.

A note on fit

Vintage and Y2K baby tees run small by design, so always check the measurements rather than the label — a "medium" from 2002 is often closer to today's XS. Every piece in our shop is measured flat and photographed honestly, so what you see is what arrives. When something is one of one, fit is everything.

New rhinestone & Y2K pieces land in the shop regularly — and each one is one of one.
